Local Home Electrification
Somers sits on the Massachusetts line in northern Tolland County, a farm town where thousands of acres are preserved through the state's purchase of development rights program. Somers Center is the main village and Somersville is the second, a mill village on the Scantic River where the Billings Mill ran from 1839 until 1969. To the east, Shenipsit State Forest began in 1927 at the summit of Soapstone Mountain, where its observation tower still stands.
There is no natural gas in Somers yet. The town's 2026 plan states that gas service is not presently available, with an extension from Enfield to Stafford along Route 190 still in planning, and Census figures show about 73 percent of homes burning fuel oil and another 14 percent propane. Most properties also rely on private wells and septic, with public water limited to Somers Center, Somersville and some adjacent areas.
Outages here are well documented. During Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 about 65 percent of Somers residents lost power and 5 percent were still out by Thursday, and the October 2019 nor'easter cut power to more than 2,700 homes and businesses, over half the town. The housing came in two big waves, the 1960s and 1970s and then the 2000s, for a median year built of 1979, and about ninety percent of homes are detached single-family.
Somers permits come from the Building Department at 600 Main Street, open Monday through Wednesday 8 to 5, Thursday until 6:30 and closed Fridays, and every inspection needs twenty-four hours' notice. Permits are filed online, and fees are based on estimated job cost rounded up to the next thousand dollars. Somers runs its own health department rather than a regional district, so septic and well questions go to the town's Director of Health and Land Use. Projects in Somers Center or Somersville may also go through village district design review.

Not today. The town's 2026 plan states that natural gas is not presently available in Somers, with a line from Enfield to Stafford along Route 190 still in planning. With about 73 percent of homes on oil and 14 percent on propane, a cold-climate heat pump is the realistic alternative to delivered fuel for most homes.
More than a quick look. The Building Department does a trench inspection where a gas or electrical line is buried, a gas pressure test, and a final with the panel cover off, an electrician on site and a live transfer test. Inspections need twenty-four hours' notice and the office is closed Fridays, so we schedule around both.
CellSun contracts for solar, roofing, generators and battery storage, and does its own electrical. On heat pumps CellSun designs and permits, and our licensed HVAC installation partner installs.
Yes. The systems we specify run efficiently well below zero, colder than Somers typically sees.
