The Gree FLEXX Ducted Inverter System
The FLEXX is a central split system: one outdoor inverter driven unit, one indoor air handler, using the ductwork you already have.
- Inverter driven, not single stage. It modulates instead of cycling on and off at full blast, which is what makes a heat pump comfortable rather than drafty.
- Rated for heating operation to -22F. Connecticut's winter design temperature is near 7 degrees. The equipment is not the limiting factor here, your envelope is.
- Up to 18.5 SEER2 and 10.5 HSPF2 on the current FLEXX ULTRA R32 line, ENERGY STAR listed on qualifying configurations.
- Sizes from 2 to 5 tons, which covers most Central Connecticut single family homes.
- Sound levels down to 55 dB(A) on the outdoor unit.

What happened
Beginning in 2013, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled roughly 2.5 million dehumidifiers manufactured by Gree and sold in the United States under a range of retail brand names. They could overheat and catch fire. In 2016, Gree appliance companies were charged with failing to report the defect to regulators as required by law and agreed to a resolution of approximately $91 million. Two former Gree USA executives were later convicted, in what the Department of Justice described as the first criminal conviction of individuals under the Consumer Product Safety Act.
What that was, and what it was not
It was a dehumidifier product line and, more seriously, a corporate failure to report a known defect on the timeline the law requires. It was not the ducted HVAC equipment on this page, and it does not describe the company's current US HVAC business, which operates under normal AHRI certification and ENERGY STAR listing like every other manufacturer.

Why Ducted Retrofit Works in Central Connecticut
Over 40 percent of Connecticut homes heat with oil according to the state's own heating portal, the highest exposure of any fuel in the state. Every one of those homes is paying for deliveries in a market nobody controls, and the ducted retrofit is the fastest way out of it.
The 1990s and 2000s subdivision housing in South Windsor, Rocky Hill and Cromwell was largely built or retrofitted with central air, which is why the ducted path is available in those towns and is often not available in the older Hartford and West Hartford stock. If your house has ducts, you are already halfway through the expensive part of this project.

Energize CT's residential Energy Optimization incentive pays $1,500 per ton, up to $10,000 in combined incentives, at the rate in effect September 1 through December 31, 2026. The rate was $1,000 per ton from January through August and moved up on September 1. On a four ton project that is $2,000 more than the same job was worth in August.

Program Requirements
- Residential Eversource or United Illuminating electric customer
- Equipment on the Energize CT Heat Pump Qualified Product List
- Installer in the Energize Connecticut Heat Pump Installer Network
- Full displacement of the existing heating system for the full rate. Partial displacement is a separate path requiring qualified integrated controls.
- Post installation inspections are random and mandatory. Failing to complete one forfeits the rebate.
- Requires full displacement of the existing heating system for the full rate, equipment on the Energize CT Qualified Product List, and an installer in the Heat Pump Installer Network.
There is no federal tax credit on a 2026 heat pump installation. Section 25C ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025.
